I walked away from this book feeling as if Eliza was my sister. I feel I've known her forever. It was a difficult book to put down and walk away from. Such grace and humility as she served the Lord! And such honesty when confronted with truths taught! She was a wonderful example. I highly recommend this book. We read stories of great men in the Bible and their preserverance; but, this book brings to life a godly woman that walked in obedience even in the face of great hardship.Product details

The Story of an Earnest Life Eliza Davies 9781117723853 Books Reviews
Today we hear talk everywhere about true discipleship, "radical" obedience, taking Jesus seriously, and many other such buzz phrases. All these phrases state important principles and they all challenge the apathy, self-centeredness, and individualism that we all wake up every morning to resist and to overcome. Meanwhile, the world (and the church) are full of "holy" hucksters eager to sell us on "the absolutely latest, greatest, and coolest way to look pious and to sound religious, while remaining busy promoting oneself and generally doing as we please.
Into such a context comes Eliza Davies, whose most flamboyant self-promotion was probably calling herself "earnest." She never knew a parent's love (in fact, quite the opposite). She did come to know Jesus Christ the Savior, and she knew him as her as her absolute and unquestioned lord and master. Jesus said he would be with his disciple--Eliza trusted her master in heaven and she found him faithful to do just as he said--despite deadly perils at high sea, through deserts crawling with venomous snakes, and with neighbors who hated her and who often threatened her life.
Jesus said that his followers must forgive all enemies and return good for evil, so Eliza did both at risk of life and at enormous expense to herself. Eliza did not know "cheap grace" as an option for herself, but if she had met it she would have denounced it as a fraud, She lived before all the modern religious fads that distract us from our real business as Jesus-people, but she personified the best truths any of them has to offer. Most of all, Eliza Davies heard Jesus say, "If anyone wishes to be my disciple, let her deny herself, and take up her cross and follow me." And because Jesus had died for her, and she was now his servant, and he had said these things, she did precisely that.
One of my ancestors sailed from Scotland to Australia in the PORTLAND in 1838.
The author of this book was also on that voyage.
Her descriptions in chapter 2 are most helpful for my own family history research.
If you're even the slightest bit tempted to self-pity, you'll
discard it after reading this book! AStonishing, that one woman could have
lived through so much, and maintained her equanimity. Could only have
happened with Christ as her guide and support!
